I hope I am in the right Q & A section of the forum. Can someone tell me what type of machines use dst?

I bought a set of embroidery designs in the language of my machine, which is pes. There was also one other matching design to go with the set, and I thought it would be perfect in the middle of a quilt with the others around it. When I went to buy it, it was only available in the dst format. I wrote in and asked why, and they told me they had tried converting it but it just would not stitch out right in any other language than dst, so they finally decided to leave it alone. This was from a very reliable website, so I figure they must be right. As far as I know, it is the only design on their site that is like that. I am not positive- i would have to go back and check, because i was really new at this at the time, but I think the design was probably even too big for my machine. I went ahead and bought it anyway, because i really liked it. I figured mayb I could find someone who had a machine that used dst, and i could pay them to sew it out for me. SO....that is my saga- anybody have the answer for me, so I know where to start my search? I am hoping to find someone local, so I can take my own thread with me- that way it will match the rest of the quilt. I just hope the stitching doesn't look too totally different. Thanks for any info you can give me!!! betsy

Huh. Interesting question. I can't figure out why they would think that it wouldn't stitch out as well in another format, but that is not what your question was about.

Truthfully, there are several machines that can use the DST format, and often times even the dealers don't know it. DST is a commercial machine format used by the Tajima brand of machines, but is sometimes called a universal format since so many machines can recognize it. Also, it will depend on the method of getting the design to the machine. Some transfer devices (like the Magic Box or the Amazing Box) will automatically convert any design they can read into the proper format for the machine the card is written for. So, even if the design was only available in DST and your machine uses PES, the box will convert it and write it in PES for your machine.

Since it is only the one design, here is something that you might consider doing. Call a local machine dealer and see if they will allow you to come in and "test" one of their machines to stitch out your design. My local dealer has allowed this to be done because it builds up good will and makes the person so much more likely to buy from them in the future. If it were more than just the one thing, I would not even suggest it, and you need to be careful because you will probably find yourself coveting the new, fancy machine (I'm saving my pennies for a nifty 12-needle machine now, myself).

Good luck in finding a way to get your design done for you!
