I will try and give a 'small' answer lol. (Anyone who knows me knows how much I ramble on... lol)
Digitizing is HOW a design is created.
You start with a picture or image and decide how to outline and/or 'fill' it with stitches... Some people do it by 'hand' (punching) one stitch at a time, some use programs that lay down areas of 'fill', some use auto-digitizing programs that make all the decisions (some of those auto decisions are not quite what you want lol) for you.
And 'Tah Dah!'
A picture is now a design! Most programs have you save the design in their own proprietary format and then you 'export' them in the format that you need for a particular kind of machine (ie PES, XXX, DST, JEF etc)

Ya never know... I seem to be gaining a reputation...in here at least
lol... I have been online with this nickname ('Silver') or variations thereof for going on 2 decades now.
If not...I am glad to meet you. If you ever need any help learning something I know even a bit about (just call me a 'Jill of all trades...master on none' ) I will be glad to help, as will many others who are far smarter than I am that 'reside' in here, in any way that we possibly can.
BTW Did ya know you can download demos of digitizing programs? You might just get bit by the digitizing bug like the rest of us!
Take Care...

Others have probably done it differently, but when my late DH bought me my Janome 300E he also got me the Digitizer Pro software. The software cost 3x as much as the machine, but it is complete, no "plug-ins" required, and the dealer we purchased from gives digitizing lessons. I am very good at programs and software, so it didn't take me a long time to learn the "workings" of it, but good digitizing does take more than that. You must learn things like push-pull compensation, underlay, pathing, etc. I got a CD from Trevor Conquergood that was invaluable in teaching those things. Also purchased that from the dealer, who is very helpful, not just after a buck and leave you hanging. It was worth every minute and dime I put into it, digitizing something no one else in the world has is just the best!!
If you're thinking about doing this, check into Embird, they have a 30-day free trial download, and there are lots of tutorials for that program. Please do a lot of checking before you purchase, because some of the less expensive programs are great, but if you want to go professional, then you will need lots more power & features. Depends on what you want to do. Do research before you spend money.
Good luck to you!!
