|
|
I have a freind that got a Brother 270D for Christmas which is the same machine that I and my aunt have. But her's seems to have some smoke soot in it from where their fireplace messed up recently. I just got it set up for her this past weekend. It started out alright but it doesn't quit sound right. It sound ruffer than mine does. Is this just the fact that it's a different machine(i.e. not mine) or should we lookinto getting it cleaned. OR would it be possible for it to straight itself out over time and use? ANy advise would be great!
Thanks!

I would not take the chance.
There could be abrasives particles on motor or other bearings and bushings or in the motor (ie brushes) itself. Most of the bearings may be sealed but there tight tolerances elsewhere I'm sure.
Rubber parts will be affected by oils and possible chemicals in the soot/smoky residue (creosote just for starts).
Carbon particles are not just abrasive but can cause a resistive short... that can equal arcing, heat build-up and possible fire hazards.
Grease on moving parts will loose their effectiveness if contaminated... they usually become 'sticky' when exposed to 'smoke' or soot.
I worked on electronics for years and saw first hand the negative effects of wood, fire and cigarette smoke on equipment, movings parts and not.
Better safe than sorry in my opinion! I would get it checked out and at least a routine cleaning asap!

I agree whole-heartedly with Silver on this one. Since your friend got it for Christmas, it should still be completely under warranty, so she should take it back to the dealer and have a complete tune-up and cleaning performed. Just hoping that things will straighten themselves out almost NEVER works when it comes to electronics, and usually makes it more expensive in the long run. _________________ -Forum Moderator-
