I don't know what the original suggestion was, but I have used the poly-pellets (used for giving weight to stuffed dolls and other animals) for making cold packs of this type. They hold on to the cold well.

I've also heard of sealing a mixture of 3 parts water with 1 part rubbing alcohol into a zip-lock freezer-weight baggie. Then, place another baggie around the first one with the zipper on the opposite side, for added strength. You can place this in the freezer, and because of the high freezing temperature for alcohol, it will never freeze solid. It will get to be a firm slush, similar to purchased cold packs, and can be reused multiple times.

I hope that one of these ideas will work for you. Smile

Regular rice, not instant, works just fine to heat in the microwave or cool in the freezer.

Hi all,
I make 'rice bags' to heat in the microwave because of my bad neck and back, they work wonderfully well. They work in the freezer too. Just remember to use material than can hold up to microwave temps without scorching, and that won't get ruined if it gets wet, because you'll get condensation coming out of the freezer. I think the bear coin purse design would be great for a child. Maybe make it out of that toweling that is cut like velvet, not loopy, it would be soft against the skin. Muslin is also a great choice. Good luck, gals. Very Happy

Yup, used the bear coin purse face to apply to a fingertip towel and made a smallish pillow shaped thingy. I folded the towel over and stitched the two sides together and then stitched Velcro to the open side. I made a separate pillow that I straight stitched across the center dividing it in two sections. I put maybe 3/4 cup rice in each section and then straight stitched across the center the other way being careful to keep the rice out of the way. I then put rice in the two remaining sections and stitched it all shut. I slid the rice pillow inside the cover. The idea was that the rice packet could be removed and the cover laundered. Oh, I did put three small Velcro pieces on the top of the inside rice pillow which holds it in place inside the cover.

Very Happy Great idea, Esther!! Thanks for posting the photo. Two great minds working together, eh? Love the idea of the fingertip towel, I usually use flannel for my 'pillowcases', because I make them more tube shape to go around my neck & shoulders, but I like the towel idea for a flat one for my lower back. I think I'll 'borrow' the idea if you don't mind. Very Happy

I also make "Herbal Therapy Packs" using the same basic idea. I have a design that is an outline of the human body and on the front are all kinds of illnesses, aches and pains. The back has the same. I make a removable pillow for the inside that has lavendar, mint, rose petals, or sandalwood in with the rice. The "Over the Hill" is added depending on the situation.
